Time For a Clean Sweep!

It's time to pull these out of the closet and go to work!

There is too much accumulation going on at this house, and the rationalization goes something like this:
I might need that someday.
That is too good to get rid of.
If you had to by it new, it would cost a lot more!
As soon as I get rid of it, I will wish I had it.
Just think of all of those things you got rid of and wish you hadn't.

The problem with all of this rationale is that sometimes you just can't find the stuff you are looking for when you need it! Like right now, I can't find my Fall stuff!

My sister is coming the first weekend in October and we are having one big yard sale. I may invite other friends too. This is the biggest yard sale weekend around here. Her husband says she will bring a U-Haul if necessary to clean out all of her stuff,
and that could be a lot of stuff! I think you might want to come check it out. I have a feeling there will be lots of stuff !
How about you, what do you do to keep from accumulating so much stuff ?
My husband says that our new motto will be

"Everything has to have a home."

Hopefully there will be a lot of progress this week. I am telling you so you all can hold me accountable for getting rid of some of the great stuff I have accumulated.
I would love to hear some of your helpful hints. Have a wonderful week!
Jackie

To help me get rid of sentimental stuff that I can't use, I take pictures of it, a nice reminder and takes up a lot less space. Maybe there is someone out there that can use it!!

That has been my motto for years...and has helped to corral my "things". Hoping for success in your venture of clearing and cleaning.

Your husband and mine have the same motto, imagine that. I sometimes find myself on "stuff" overload, and then it gets harder to make decisions. I find having a serious talk with myself throughout the organizing process...sometimes helps me. I wish you the best in this huge endeavor.

Hope you have a wonderful week too!

I whole-heartedly agree with your hubby's motto. I hate having "stuff" and I really hate looking for "stuff" I know I already have.

This Wednesday my post is about creating a clothing inventory, you should come by. ;)

Oh I so get it...it's often difficult to get rid of potentially useful stuff, and then of course there's the sentimental stuff, and the clothing we plan on someday fitting into stuff, the list just goes on. Being raised by immigrant parents who repurposed everything just makes it harder. I've tried the garage sale thing but ultimately would just about give it all away. So now I save myself the work and donate it all to foodbank thrift stores, non-profit career clothing stores for needy women re-entering the workplace, pet shelter stores etc. My new motto for clothing is that for any new item that goes into the closet something else must leave! Good luck with your stuff!

What a timely post! My daughter and I spent many hours in our basement today, rearranging and purging. I've spent a lot of time down there this summer, trying to get rid of things I haven't used since we moved 4-1/2 years ago. What a job! And there's still a lot more to do.

Cleaning out the "dark" places must be in the Fall air....I spent ALL day Sat. cleaning out two large and packed bedroom closets. Three days this week my husband is taking a loaded down backseat and trunk of his car and taking stuff to a church clothing/food/ministry center in our town. Wouldn't fit in just ONE car load, yikes !!!!

My daughter, years ago, gave me advice on this issue and I have passed it on to many others. "If something doesn't bless your life, pass it on....and let it bless someone else's life." I like that!

When I am tossing out all kinds of things that I spent $$$$ on -- I just confess it to the LORD, ask His forgiveness for such terrible use of His money, repent, let go of it and begin again. Very therapeutic.

Blessings on your cleaning !

Everything has a place is definitely one of my mottos, but oh, it's SO hard to live by when I visit a thrift store! (Or...a garage sale! :P) I usually make a list of stuff that I need/want, and once the list is done, it's DONE. But...sometimes I don't stick to it. :P Great motto- and it also is very organized! :D

ooohh FUN!! How far away are you again?! Lol.

And I'm not sure if I'll do the swap in October now or wait - things have been so hectic around here I don't know if I want to add something else to my to-do list!
